NEW ORPHANAGE

The Story

In 2014, when my youngest child went off to college, I went to India for six months and ended up at the Good Shepherd Agricultural Mission, a large orphanage in the north near the Nepal border. When I arrived, I was sick, a bit lost, not really sure where I was going in life. My 21 year marriage had just ended. I’d been laid off at work, sold my house. I was homeless and alone. But the kids at the Mission changed all that.

These were not the hollowed-out castaways who needed me to fill them up. They were full of joy and affection, and they poured their love into me day after day as if I were the one who was empty.

  • Giving and Receiving

“It’s better to give than to receive.” This bit of pithy wisdom was originally attributed to Jesus by Luke (or whoever wrote the book of Acts), and it’s most often used by adults to encourage kids not to be so greedy. As every parent knows,...

Orphanages have a bad rap these days. It’s almost become a negative term. When I type the word “orphanage” into Google just now, many of the stories I find highlight the darker side of orphanage life. One of the first sites that comes up, www.orphanage.no,...

THE BEGINNING

During my stay at the orphanage, I set up two Indiegogo fundraising campaigns and was amazed by the generosity of friends and strangers worldwide. Seeking only $9,000, we raised over $70,000! Take a look at our “Thank You” video and see if you can keep from smiling.

During these campaigns, I was contacted by many other orphanages from all over the world, all looking for help. They were trying to raise money, too; for blankets, to relocate, to repair a leaky roof, to send their kids to school, to take in more children, to build a bigger facility. Clearly the need is great, but there are scams everywhere. “Orphanage Tourism” is on the rise, using children as a way to take money from generous donors. How do you know who to trust? Who should you support?

And then one night, I awoke at two in the morning with an idea:

I COULD HELP FIND THE GOOD ONES

I could create a platform for those orphan champions who are doing it right, telling their stories, and pairing them with donors who are inspired to help. I could use my production background to create inspiring videos, use 100% of funds raised to help children in need, and work with the best local experts to have the most impact.

100% MODEL

Project money donated for projects will go to projects. Operating costs will be covered separately.

SHOW RESULTS

Through pictures, video and stories, we’ll prove all projects, allowing contributors to see their results.

LOCAL EXPERTS

Working with trusted passionate people already making a difference, we’ll change the world together.

I’ve seen first hand how trans formative this work can be when done right. To take a child from a place of no love, no hope, no family into a safe, nurturing home is the best work I can think of and the best use of money I know.

We’re just getting started but I hope you’ll sign up for our mailing list.  Be the first to hear about the life-changing projects we’re discovering and help to bring about a New Orphan Age.
